The story of 16 Sunny drive is the story of my parents. Purchased in 1975 it was a two bedroom one bath home on a nice lot with hills, trees and views of Richardson Bay (now covered up by trees). It is the story of a young family and an artist dad who over time have transformed this home over 41 years piece by piece into something remarkable. A tour de force of creativity and craftsmanship. A swing in the living room, hand hewn doors, hand carved handles, a beach wood loft, large hand hewn timber support poles, and decks and patios covered in vines and stone. The house is a love affair with travel and ideas around the kitchen table. “Should we add a slide or a turret?”, we pondered as children. The old brick chimney became the new brick oven hood and became an arch into the kitchen of antique wood fired seasoned bricks. A grand cobblestone fireplace became the new center piece of the soaring living room. Why not? Open wood beamed ceilings meet plaster and painted wood floors. We crawled over the cobblestone as children and climbed scaffolding and planks. We ate breakfast, scooping our cereal without any walls and we watched our parents and their contractors work to make something that took 41 years.

The home is a blend of Spanish and Mexican hacienda, Italian tuscany and English manor because it somehow works. Work your way up the path across ponds and waterfalls by the Italian gardens, pathways and large patios. The front door that greets you is an antique heavy lumbered double door. It was once a door that became a dining room table only to be bought at a furniture store and become a door again. The living area has a swing, 20 foot ceilings (once home to a climbing rope) and 10 foot sliders that open to a large Ipe deck, Italian rails and views of the San Anselmo and San Rafael hills. Originally there were two swings put in by my dad and as kids we absolutely loved it. Occasionally we would mark the ceiling with our feet. At dinner parties guests and their kids always go straight to the swing. I swung on it when I was a child, I swung on it when I was a teen, I swung on it when I was a college student and about to be married I still swing on it.

The house has moved and popped from 2 bedrooms to 4, from one living area to two and a dining room. The kitchen from a nook to a modern expansive cooking and entertainment area with large Carrera slabs for counters. This chef’s kitchen is centered in the middle of a great room full of light, views and surrounded by decks and patios. The floor of the kitchen, family and dining area made of tile and wood were all hand cut and laid by us kids and our dad. Each piece placed imperfectly perfect. This is a house where the chips and marks are supposed to be there. Everything in the home is sprinkled with a beautiful patina. Most of the furniture that was once there was hand made, or restored from a fire as my dad worked as a furniture restorer in Marin for 30 years. Upstairs are custom windows, high open beam ceilings and beautiful thick pine wood floors secured with square nails that my dad hand ground. An open office is comforted and lit by a large arched custom double window with views of the Sycamore tree that graces the yard. The outdoor rotisserie fireplace and pizza oven covered by a light vine plant is constructed out of 2,000 bricks has sparked countless evenings with food, fun and warmth. There is an artist studio above the three car garage with a hand carved door centered with a ship’s porthole window. Inside are arched windows, thick wood floors, a full bath, french doors that open to a Juliet deck balcony and views of Richardson Bay.

The blue stone patios are enclosed with hand made Italian gates. The garden is decorated with art, crushed granite paths and patios, grape vines, lemon and lime trees, rosemary, cactus, an apricot tree, an apple tree and others. There are three bluestone large patios, a crushed granite patio, a large deck, three ponds and a waterfall. My brother’s wedding was here, countless dinners (indoor and outdoor), wood fired pizza parties and conversations by the fire. The story of this home is the story of my family for the last 41 years.
